What is artificial grass? How is it manufactured?
In many stadiums, parks, courtyards, shopping malls, and even many landscapes of cities, we often see patches of "grass" that remain green throughout the year. They don't require watering, meticulous trimming, or frequent maintenance, yet they always look lush and green - this is fake turf.
Artificial grass is actually an artificial technological product that imitates natural turf. Its main component is made of synthetic fibers, and its appearance, practicality, and touch are very close to that of a real lawn. It is widely used in many sports fields, such as football fields, rugby fields, tennis courts, hockey fields, as well as community, school, rooftop gardens, and shopping mall site layouts, etc. Compared to traditional real turf, artificial grass is more resistant to foot traffic, has lower maintenance costs, and is not affected by harsh weather conditions. Therefore, it is increasingly favored by many people all over the world.
So, how is artificial lawn produced? The entire process can be roughly divided into the following steps.
First of all ,the step is the production of "grass fibers". The "grass fibers or called grass leaves" of artificial turf are usually made from plastic raw materials such as polyethylene and polypropylene by drawing. These raw materials are melted in machines and equipment at high temperatures, then formed into thin strips or fibers through an extrusion machine. Then, through production processes such as stretching and shaping, they acquire certain high strength, flexibility, and resilience. To make the lawn look more realistic, the fake lawn fibers are also dyed in natural green or colors close to those of natural lawns, sometimes with double-color or three-color imitation of withered yellow tones, making it more realistic.
What’s more, step is tufting. This is similar to the production principle of making carpets. The rolled base fabric (usually polypropylene polyethylene or polyester fabric) is processed by a tufting machine. Hundreds of needles simultaneously insert the grass fibers into the base fabric, producing neatly arranged grass bundles.
Finally, apply a special adhesive coating on the back of the fake grass (the underside) (such as styrene-butadiene rubber or two-component or single-component polyurethane), further strengthening the grass fibers to prevent them from falling off during use and enhancing the overall durability, strength, and frequency of use of the turf. After applying the adhesive, it is dried, and after the adhesive solidifies, the turf is cut to the required size according to the customer's custom dimensions.
When laying synthetic grass in practice, construction workers will first lay a layer of crushed stones and a buffer pad on the ground, then unfold the turf, use adhesive and joint fabric to connect it, and finally fill quartz sand or rubber particles to fix the grass fibers and provide a buffering effect, making it more comfortable and safe for people to walk on or for athletes to run on.
