From the temporary grass surface of the World Cup to the revolution of no-fill: The next step of artificial football grass
The 16th round knockout match of the 2026 USA-Canada-Mexico World Cup kicked off at the Atlanta Stadium, featuring an intense and thrilling contest. Egypt was leading the defending champion Argentina 2-0 at the 78th minute of the game. Everyone thought a surprise was about to occur. However, in the last 12 minutes, the situation changed dramatically. Argentina scored three goals in a row and completed a stunning 3-2 comeback in the injury time. Egypt, due to two controversial key judgments, officially appealed to FIFA after the game. But few noticed that the place where this dramatic comeback occurred - the Atlanta Stadium - itself was a "special sample" regarding field technology.
The Atlanta Stadium is usually the home field of the NFL Atlanta Falcons and is usually covered with artificial grass. To meet the requirements of the World Cup, the organizers replaced the artificial grass with natural grass before the game. This is not an isolated case: Among the 16 stadiums for the 2026 World Cup, 8 originally used artificial grass, and all needed to switch from artificial grass to natural grass before the game. The temporary natural grass surface exposed problems in stability. Players later described the ball's bounce as "springboards". The research team from the University of Tennessee conducted over 170 experiments, measuring the height of the grass millimeter by millimeter - because a difference of 5 millimeters in grass length could turn the stadium from "velcro" to a smooth carpet. This "millimeter-level" strict control of natural grass surfaces precisely contrasts the core proposition of artificial grass: how to eliminate the constraints of natural conditions while making the ball run on it as if it were real grass.

Current artificial grass technology is advancing on two paths simultaneously. The traditional filled-type grass relies on quartz sand and rubber particles to maintain the uprightness and rebound of the grass fibers, and is still the largest type of football artificial grass globally, with the area of artificial grass laid in China exceeding 250 million square meters. However, the full life cycle environmental cost of filled-type grass is very high - about 20 million square meters of artificial turf are retired worldwide each year, but the recycling rate is less than 10%. The no-fill technology is a response to this pain point. the no-fill system adopts thermodynamic integrated molding base and glue-free technology, completely eliminating the filling particles. After retirement, it can be physically crushed and recycled, and a single standard football field can reduce about 300 tons of fill material landfill. More importantly, the pursuit of sports performance: no-fill grass absorbs 65.2% of impact, has a vertical deformation of 13.4 millimeters, a rotational resistance of 29.5 newtons-meters, a ball rolling distance of 7.2 meters, and a ball rebound of 0.77 meters. Core indicators have met or even exceeded the requirements of international top-level events. FIFA has officially confirmed that the no-fill football grass system can be certified through the FIFA Quality Programme.
The future evolution direction of football artificial turf is likely not a single narrative of "no-fill replacing fill", but rather the refinement of two technical routes in their respective applicable scenarios. The no-fill system, with its advantages of low maintenance, recyclability, and no particle migration, is rapidly penetrating in school football fields, community venues, and training bases; while the filled-type grass will still have a place in high-intensity professional event venues. Its technical improvement direction focuses on the environmentalization of the filling material, such as replacing traditional SBR rubber particles with degradable materials, and improving the wear resistance of the grass fibers to extend the lifespan of the stadium. The experience of the World Cup temporary grass surface precisely shows that what truly determines the football field experience is not the binary label of "natural or artificial", but the quantifiable sports performance indicators such as ball speed, grip, cushioning, and consistency. When the rebound data of the ball on the non-filled lawn has approached 0.77 meters - a figure that closely overlaps with the performance range of high-quality natural grass - the performance gap between artificial turf and natural grass is gradually being narrowed by the advancements in materials science and structural engineering.
